Jo Sonja Polyurethane Water Based Varnishes are available in Gloss, Satin, and Matte finishes. These clear, non-yellowing varnishes dry quickly and are formulated to be durable enough for both indoor and outdoor use. The Matte and Satin varnishes should be shaken gently before use to evenly distribute the matting agent; over shaking may lead to bubbles.

Directions:

  • Preparation: A coat of Clear Glaze Medium is recommended as a barrier coat prior to varnishing, especially in areas with high humidity or variable climate conditions.
  • Application: Use the varnish full strength. If thinning is necessary, add a few drops of Flow Medium or Retarder, but take care not to over-dilute.
  • Technique: Apply in thin layers using a criss-cross motion with a soft but firm bristle brush, appropriate for the surface size. Finish with smooth strokes in the direction of the wood grain.
  • Drying: Allow to air dry for at least an hour before applying additional coats. The total drying time will vary depending on the local climate and humidity.
  • Sanding: After applying three coats, sand lightly if 24 hours have elapsed between coats to ensure proper adhesion.
  • For Enhanced Durability: For an alcohol-resistant finish or for use outdoors, apply a minimum of 4 to 5 coats of varnish. Allow the varnish to cure for at least two weeks before use.
  • Using a Hairdryer: If using a hairdryer for surface drying, hold it away from the surface to avoid excessive heat, which could cause crazing.

Additional Information:

  • Not Suitable For: This product is not recommended for use over oil-based paint or oil-based antiquing finishes.
  • Coverage: Approximately 1 ml covers 251 sq cm, 1 oz covers about 8 sq ft.
  • Safety and Cleanup: This water-based varnish is non-toxic, conforms to ASTM D 4236, and can be cleaned up with mild soap and cool water. It is safe to dry with a hairdryer.

The Decorative Painting System

With the range of paints, also comes a range of mediums to allow unlimited techniques.  Acrylic mediums are invaluable if you wish to change the paint consistency or alter drying times.  Chroma has discovered ways of allowing the same set of colours to be applied on a variety of surfaces such as wood, metal, glass and textiles.  The same colours (with the use of the mediums) can be stencilled, stamped, crackled or used in a host of elaborate faux finishes.  By experimenting with the mediums, there are endless possibilities that can be achieved.  Technique information sheets, designed to inspire your imagination, can be found on this website.   Chroma continues its research and development of new products.
